2011 Toybaru FT-86 – It’s official

Toyota FT-86
Some more news on the topic have just appeared. Toyota has just released the first official photos of the FT-86 model. As You probably know by now, I’m not Toyota’s biggest fan. So I find this car as a first step to change my opinion about this automaker. As You could read on Carsoblog some time ago – this near-production coupe will be co-developed by Toyota and Subaru. Also it will be sold under these two badges separately. And what is the best news and worth waiting for – it’s planned to make its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month.
The Toybaru coupe is rear-wheel drive, powered by a front-mounted, 2.0-liter “flat four” – boxer engine. Of course delivered by Subaru, as Toyota doesn’t have any interesting engine’s on market.
“The FT-86 Concept is neither an electric vehicle nor a hybrid vehicle, but is a sports model with a gasoline engine developed to convey the essential appeal of automobiles in a new era. It is a must-see concept car that expresses TMC’s desire to once again create a Toyota sports car” – the Japanese automaker said officially. And thank god for staying “classic” and pure – no electric junk inside.

Still few details are not confirmed, but some sources claim that the car will be equipped with full range of Impreza’s engines (which by the way isn’t so wide). Starting from 150 HP 2.0 diesel, to 2.0 – 2.5 liter (depending on market) gasoline engines known from WRX.
The exterior design (hopefully it won’t change much when it reaches production in 2011), is clearly inspired by Toyota’s FT-HS hybrid concept that had it’s premiere at the Detroit Auto Show 2007.

Toyota FT-86 Interior
The FT-86’s interior styling looks way to modern for production (especially for Toyota). At least the direction is good – bold and innovative.
I must admit that for all that can be told now (as no test drives were performed yet) – the car looks and sounds promising. Now we just have to wait for a more “heavyweight” sport car – Supra. And maybe a convertible?

The Subaru version that will share the same “hardware”, but will feature its own unique styling. Hopefully, Subaru’s “controversial” designers won’t disappoint this time… Please don’t create another Impreza!
